Michael A. Higgins, Counselor-Hempstead H.S./Co-Founder
Long Island Express T&F Club
Michael A. Higgins is a school counselor at Hempstead High School (New York) having served as an education professional for over 25 years.
He earned a bachelor's degree in International Business from Auburn University and a master's in School Counseling from the College of New Rochelle where he was the Coordinator for Student Retention and taught as an adjunct professor at its Rosa Parks Campus.
Before arriving at the college Mr. Higgins was the Director of the Talent Search Initiative at the Harbor for Boys and Girls in Harlem New York. Michael was standout as a high school student-athlete earning a track scholarship and a football letter at the aforementioned Auburn University and had successfully transitioned to the coaching ranks where he served as Hempstead's Boy's Varsity Track and Field coach from 2004-2009.
During his tenure the USATF Level 1 certified coach was able to resurrect a program from its 2-year hiatus and guide it to the school's first state championships in 28 years. Within a six year span his boys set 14 school records, won 4 straight Nassau County individual and relay championships, produced two Nassau County Runners of Year and won 3 New York State titles with 14 all-state runners.
Michael is now the co-founder of the Long Island Elite Track and Field Club, which provides athletic training and education as well as encourage personal development and community involvement for runners 8 and up.
Married for the past 20 years he is the father of a 13-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son.
